Abstract
The coxsackieviruses group B (CVB) are members of the genus Enterovirus and share many properties with other members of this group. There are several excellent reviews covering the basic epidemiology and clinical characteristics of enteroviruses and their infections (MOdlin 1990; Morens et al. 1991; MElnick 1996), and this material will not be repeated in detail except as it relates to recent studies. Most of the conclusions concerning enteroviruses in general are directly applicable to CVB, including: pronounced seasonality in temperate climates; geographic, age, and sex distribution; high incidence and prevalence; moderately high transmission; and most clinical syndromes.
