Abstract
The environmental pollutant 2,3,7,8-tetrachlordibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) is one of the most potent tumour promoters in rodent liver (Pitot et al. 1980). TCDD enhances the expansion of preneoplastic liver foci finally leading to the development of hepatocellular carcinoma. The exact mechanism of action of TCDD as a tumour promoter, however, in particular the role of dioxin receptor-mediated signalling pathways, is unknown. Recently, it has been shown, that TCDD inhibits apoptosis of preneoplastic hepatocytes rather than enhancing their proliferation (Stinchcombe et al. 1995).
