Ontogeny of Human Natural and Acquired Immunity

Part of the book series: Current Topics in Microbiology and Immunology ((CT MICROBIOLOGY,volume 222))

Abstract

In many species, the integrity of the body against bacterial and viral infections is preserved during perinatal life by the development of specialized organs and differentiation of a variety of immunological competent cells together with the temporary acquisition of maternally derived antibodies. The ontogeny of the immune system is a complex process that requires the maturation of many cells with different biological functions and the synthesis of a large number of proteins acting, for example, as ligands, receptors, transport, or lytic molecules.
