Major Carbohydrate Xenotransplantation Antigens

  • Chapter
Xenotransplantation

Abstract

The main difference in carbohydrate antigens expressed at the surface of vascular endothelium, between pig and man, is the presence of human histo-blood group ABH antigens in the same location where the pig expresses αGal linear antigens [1, 2]. Humans lack α-galactosyltransferase enzyme activity and, in spite of having the same lactosamine precursor chains and similar terminal sialylated antigens, are unable to make αGal epitopes (Table 1) [3].
