Abstract

With more than 500 islands, Denmark has a coastline of about 7,000 km and its environmental policy has, compared with other countries, focused to a considerable extent on the aquatic environment. The many bays and fjords have been vulnerable to municipal and industrial discharges, as well as to agricultural runoff. The establishment of a water quality policy was thus one of the most important results of the work of the Pollution Council in the late 1960s (Forureningsradet, 1971), and it remains an important concern.
