Abstract

The term “environmental policy” in the UK covers a wide field, ranging from pollution control covering air, waters, waste management, nuclear emissions, and noise, through land use planning, housing, building conservation and urban regeneration to the conservation and protection of flora and fauna. Because of limitations of space, the principal focus of this chapter will be upon institutions and policies related to pollution control. This is an analytical convenience rather than a description of how policies and environmental effects work. After all, acidifying emissions can adversely affect the stonework of cathedrals, and good land use planning is essential in the design of successful waste disposal strategies. However, this focus will also mean that some important aspects of British environmental policy - including land use planning and flora and fauna protection will be ignored in what follows.
