Abstract

Japan is an island nation stretching relatively far from North to South. Its land is full of topographical and climatic variety, providing a rich natural environment and much scenic beauty. But this natural wealth has been sacrificed or subjected to irreversible changes during the course of post-war economic development. Natural coastlines, in particular, were transformed to artificial ones as a result of land reclamation from the sea and rapid urbanisation.
