Abstract
Advances in recombinant DNA technology, beginning in the 1970’s, brought the possibility of “gene therapy” closer to reality by enabling the isolation of purified genes on a preparative scale, their characterization at the nucleotide sequence level, and manipulation of their sequence. More recently, the development of gene transfer methods provided an essential capability and led to the first publicly approved clinical applications of gene transfer to humans [1].
