Abstract
In the past decade, the development of techniques and equipment for rapid and accurate sequencing of large numbers of DNA samples has made the systematic sequencing of whole eukaryotic genomes possible. A rapid approach of obtaining information on coding sequences is to perform partial sequencing of cDNAs. These expressed sequence tags (ESTs) are obtained by random, single-pass sequencing of cDNA libraries to generate 500 to 600 base tags. Extensive analyses of ESTs were first carried out in human tissues (Adams et al. 1991, 1993) and then applied to plants (Höfte et al. 1993; Newman et al. 1994; Cooke et al. 1996) and fungi (Lee et al. 1996). dbEST, the current GenBank division that contains EST sequences, contains more than 882457 sequences from 55 organisms (Boguski 1995).
