Abstract

Transrectal ultrasound (TRUS), which is commonly used to evaluate prostatic carcinomas, also may be employed to define the local extension of cervical carcinomas (INNOCENTI et al. 1992; ZARITZKY et al. 1979). Study of the cervix uteri and cervical disease by means of TRUS is made possible by the close relationship between the probe and the cervix. On the other hand the adnexae and the corpus uteri do not lend themselves to assessment by TRUS owing to their anterior and cephalad position; they can, however, be easily studied with a transvaginal probe (transvaginal ultrasound).
