Environment and Security in International Politics — An Introduction

  • Chapter
Environmental Change and Security

Part of the book series: International and European Environmental Policy Series ((ENVIRONMENTAL))

Abstract

At the end of the millennium, the causal linkages among global, regional and local environmental change on the one hand and violent conflict on the other have emerged as an important topic of the social and political sciences. The debate is concerned with understanding the conditions under which environmental changes in different regions of the world lead to violent conflicts. What are the connections between environmental degradation, resource scarcity and violent conflict? Which regions of the world are particularly susceptible to conflict? Which demands do these new security policy challenges place upon polity and society? How can environmentally-induced conflicts be prevented?
