Die ersten Informationen über den Bahnbetriebsunfall erfolgte telefonisch durch die Polizeiinspektion Celle an die BGS Inspektion (BGS I) Lüneburg am 03.06.1998 um 11:08 Uhr. Erstmeldungen der BGS I Lüneburg an die Lage- und Einsatzzentrale (LEZ) des Bundesgrenzschutzamtes (BGSAmt) Hannover erfolgte um 11:20 Uhr. Zeitgleich wurde vom BGSAmt Hannover das Lagezentrum (LZ) des Grenzschutzpräsidiums (GSP) Nord alarmiert.
