Zusammenfassung

Die enormen und anhaltenden persönlichen und sozialen Folgen psychischer Erkrankungen sind seit langem bekannt. Die Chronizität von Krankheiten wie Schizophrenic und Demenz und die zwar geringere, aber auch lange Zeit bestehende Beeinträchtigung durch Depression und viele Neurosen haben erhebliche Auswirkungen auf die Wahrnehmung, Gesundheit, Alltagsbewältigung und Lebensqualität. Sie lassen viele Erkrankte und ihre Familien mit eingeschränkten, verarmten, oft zerstörten Leben zurück. Die stationäre und ambulante Pflege von Menschen mit psychischen Störungen, die Unterstützung ihrer Familien und die Behandlung der Symptome sowie die klinischen und sozialen Folgeerscheinungen verursachen beträchtliche Kosten für Gesundheitsfürsorge, soziale Dienste und andere Institutionen. Auch die Erkrankten und ihre Familien werden direkt oder indirekt mit Kosten belastet. Mit anderen Worten, die Folgen psychischer Krankheit können weitreichend und teuer sein.
