The Clogging Capacity of Effluents

Effluent reservoirs provide a special aquatic environment in which physical and biological processes affect water quality and influence the reservoir effluent characteristics (Dor et al. 1987). The effluent is often applied through drip irrigation systems. Besides the advantages as an efficient irrigation method, drip irrigation with wastewater effluent provides safety in terms of preventing dispersion of bacteria and viruses into the air and on the irrigated crop canopy and produce (Libhaber and Mintzker 1990). Clogging of the drippers is the greatest problem of these systems. The use of filters at the head of the irrigation network sharply improves the network performance, but the filters themselves may clog so frequently that the costs of manual or automatic backwash are too high (Juanicó et al. 1995). Hence, the performance of the drip irrigation systems is highly dependent on the filterability of the irrigation water.
