The first wastewater reservoir in Israel was built in 1969 in Yoqne’am and had a capacity of 330 000 m3. Today there are more than 200 wastewater reservoirs and they are - besides Lake Kinneret - the most significant type of inland water environment in the country. Therefore, wastewater storage reservoirs represent an environmental opportunity for a variety of faunal elements. Half of the reservoirs are fed exclusively by raw or treated sewage: these constitute the subject of the present article. Other reservoirs receive also freshwater from flood run-off, the National Water Carrier as well as springs and streams and from underground sources. These waters are mixed in various proportions with treated sewage as well as with water from hypertrophic fish ponds. A few reservoirs also receive a mixture of brackish waters. Other types of hypertrophic aquatic ecosystems in the region are the polluted streams and the waters of the Hula Nature Reserve.
