Abstract

Splenectomy remains an important therapeutic option in children with a variety of hematological and immunological disorders. For conditions in which the immunological or filtering functions of the spleen lead to anemia, thrombocytopenia or altered white cell function removal of the spleen is often desirable. Pain related to capsular stretch, cyst formation abscess and torsion can also be addressed surgically. Potential disadvantages of the procedure include surgical and anesthetic morbidity, abdominal wall scarring, and the lifelong risk of postsplenectomy sepsis. These concerns have appropriately limited indications for splenectomy to cases in which medical therapy is impractical or no longer effective.
