Abstract
There are a variety of pathologic periosteal reactions1 in which mucocutaneous lesions or other external abnormalities (e.g., exophthalmos) occur as associated features, and a synopticevaluation of all symptoms is needed in order to make a correct diagnosis. The congenital or acquired disorders discussed in this chapter are invariably associated with both periosteal and external changes, which constitute the major symptoms. These criteria are met by several other disorders which, though listed in Tables 7.1 and 7.2, are covered elsewhere in the book because of the way in which the chapters are organized. These tables also include entities in which periosteal reactions may or may not occur, such as certain collagen diseases and sarcoidosis.
Some diseases, such as infectious mononucleosis and rubella, are not covered in this monograph because periosteal changes do not consistently occur and the general clinical features and organic disease symptoms are usually sufficient to make a diagnosis.
