Abstract

Collagen diseases is a collective term for a group of diseases whose basic pathoanatomic feature is a fibrinoid degeneration (fibrinoid necrosis) of the connective tissues. The pathogenesis of these diseases involves the deposition of immune complexes around blood vessels, resulting in vascular damage. Collagen diseases are characterized clinically by overlap phenomena and immunologically by non-organ-specific autoantibodies, explaining why collagen diseases are classified among the systemic autoimmune disorders. Collagen diseases may be associated with inflammatory joint changes, bone necrosis, and soft-tissue calcifications (Thibièreg-Weissenbach syndrome) which, when accompanied by more or less specific skin changes, overlap the specialties of internal medicine (particularly rheumatology and immunology), clinical radiology, and dermatology and thus should be approached from a synoptic perspective.
