Abstract

The detection of renal masses by ultrasonography (US), computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) relies on high-quality examinations. Therefore, optimization of the imaging techniques is a continuous challenge for radiologists. Once a renal mass is detected, the radiologist is faced with two additional tasks: (1) to determine whether it is a simple renal cyst/benign lesion or a malignant tumor, or more simply, whether or not it is renal cancer; and (2) in cases of suspected malignancy, to ascertain the stage, or, ultimately, whether the case is operable. Therefore, imaging strategies must be directed towards appropriate differentiation and staging of any renal mass lesion.
