Abstract

The Internet was born as a simple network of computers that used UNIX commands to exchange data. The functions of sending and receiving e-mail, downloading files and accessing databases were basically accomplished by taking control of remote computers and accessing their data-storage systems via UNIX syntax, which all computers connected through the Internet were able to understand as a prerogative to obtain Internet connectivity. In simple words, data exchange through the Internet was a laborious task because of the complex syntax of UNIX commands and this explained the poor diffusion of use of the net outside research laboratories.
