Abstract

Interventional magnetic resonance imaging (I-MRI) is the use of MR images for biopsy and drainage, and for both guidance and monitoring of minimally invasive therapy (including thermal destruction of tumors). As a result, MRI is rapidly becoming an important tool in the performance of interventional procedures; the medical use of MRI may be expanded from diagnosis only to treatment. However, MRI pulse sequences must be adapted to meet the requirements for: (a) high temporal resolution during biopsy needle insertion, (b) high spatial resolution for accurate needle tip localization, (c) rapid reconstruction/display to achieve near-real-time guidance, and (d) contrast between normal and pathologic tissue and the interventional devices.
