Abstract

Annual electricity consumption in China in 1997 was approximately 1,100 billion kWh. Motors use over 600 billion kWh per year, representing the single largest electricity-consuming segment in China. Small motors, ranging from .55 kW to 200 kW, account for about 90% of motor energy losses and 70% of annual demand. With an average efficiency of only 89.3%, these motors represent an enormous opportunity for energy savings. It is estimated that, within 10 years, over 34 billion kWh per year could be saved if a minimal efficiency standard was set equivalent to the US EPACT efficiency standards.
