Abstract

West Africa is defined here as the region which is covered by theFlora of West Tropical Africa (Keay and Hepper 1954–72). This work embraces Upper Guinea, a region extending from Lat. 18° in the north (southern Mauretania) to the coast, eastward to the boundary of Chad, and in the south to a line running through the northwestern parts of Cameroon. Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon, which are either only partly or not at all included in the Flora of West Tropical Africa, will also be included in the following account. Moreover, the following description will also include data on the vegetation of inselbergs to the north and east of West Africa, i. e., those situated in the western parts of the Sahara and to the east of Cameroon into the Central African Republic.
