Abstract
Bone cements are used for the fixation of artificial joints. The cements fill the free space between the prosthesis and the bone. The connection between the cement and the bone and between the cement and the prosthesis is only mechanical; therefore, it has been repeatedly, intensively studied ever since bone cements were introduced in hip arthroplasty. The irregularities of the bone surface and the penetration of the cement into the trabecular spongiosa are an important prerequisite for long survival of implants (Charnley, 1970). In this regard, the cement acts as an elastic zone that, because of its stiffness, cushions the forces affecting the bone.
