A multigrid method for accelerating superposition dose calculations

Abstract

Current clinical practice relies on the superposition method of photon dose calculations for accurate results in heterogeneous tissues. We introduce a variable resolution, or multigrid, method for superposition calculations that is guided by a priori knowledge to improve efficiency. In this method, dose is calculated at full resolution in regions where large dose changes are expected. Dose is calculated at half resolution where small dose changes are expected, and interpolation is used to estimate intermediate points in these regions.
