Abstract
The pubertal increase in sebum secretion is a prerequisite in the pathogenesis of acne vulgaris. Almost all acne patients suffer from seborrhea, that is, sebum production well above the mean for normals. However, not all individuals with seborrhea suffer from acne. Acne does not occur when sebum excretion is low. The uniform efficacy of sebosuppressive drugs such as systemic estrogens, antiandrogens, and isotretinoin confirms the importance of sebum in the pathogenesis of acne.
