Endothelial Complications

Penetrating Keratoplasty

Abstract

Immunological reactions involving the epithelium, the superficial stroma and the entire stroma appear in only one form. In contrast to this an immunological reaction in the endothelium occurs in varying forms. The subclinical course of an endothelial immune reaction which contributes to cell loss observed in the first two years following penetrating keratoplasty is under discussion [21]. Precipitates on the endothelium confined to the transplant without stromal edema, precipitates with edema and a progressive, moving lymphocyte line which can also occur in combination with irregularly distributed precipitates have been documented. These different forms must be distinguished in terms of chronology, course and prognosis.
