Abstract

The prevalence of overweight and obesity is increasing in the United States (PI-SUNYER 1994 ; FLEGAL et al. 1998) and in many other nations of the world (OBESITY 1997). From a public health viewpoint, it is important to establish the health risks of such a phenomenon. Both morbidity and mortality risk have been shown to increase with increasing weight in population studies. In addition, it has become evident that central fat distribution has a negative impact on health. This chapter describes the epidemiologic evidence that defines the risks of obesity and of fat distribution on morbidity and mortality.
