Zusammenfassung
Seit rund 100 Jahren wird der wissenschaftliche Diskurs um die Bedeutung psychosozialer Einflußfaktoren auf die Entstehung und den Verlauf der Schizophrenie geführt. Während Kraepelin (1896) der Erkrankung einen unausweichlich in „Verblödung“ endenden (biologischen) Krankheitsprozeß zugrunde legte, wurde Mitte des 20. Jh. deutlich, daß sich viele der beobachteten Symptome und Verhaltensauffälligkeiten keineswegs so schicksalhaft entwickelten, wie dies die Beobachtungen an langfristig Hospitalisierten um die Jahrhundertwende hatten vermuten lassen, sondern vielmehr den kustodialen Lebensumständen der Betroffenen zuzuschreiben waren (Wing u. Freudenberg 1961; Wing u. Brown 1970). Die Erkenntnis, daß die soziale Lebenswelt einen solchen Einfluß auf den Verlauf schwerer seelischer Erkrankungen, insbesondere der Schizophrenie, nehmen konnte, legte den Grundstein für die weltweiten Versorgungsreformen in der 2. Hälfte des 20. Jh.
