Zusammenfassung
Depressionen treten bei älteren Menschen wahrscheinlich nicht mehr und nicht weniger häufig auf als bei jüngeren Menschen. Der Schaden, den die Depression anrichtet, bleibt derselbe. Sie übt einen entscheidenden Einfluß auf die Lebensqualität aus und weist einen engen Zusammenhang mit dem Suizid auf. Auch wenn ihre Ätiologie im Alter aufgrund der in dieser Lebensphase immer häufiger werdenden Verlusterlebnisse und körperlichen Gebrechen etwas anders aussehen mag, ist sie auch in diesem Lebensabschnitt mit Hilfe von multidisziplinären Therapieverfahren gut zu behandeln.
