Madkour’s Brucellosis

Abstract

Localisation of brucellosis in the central nervous system, although uncommon, can have a devastating impact (Ambramsky 1977; Larbrisseau et al. 1978; Bashir et al. 1985; Mousa et al. 1986; Shakir et al. 1986 and 1987) with serious and permanent neurological deficits. Brucella melitensis is the most frequently encountered species in patients with neurobrucellosis, being the most invasive and most pathogenic. Other Brucella species have also been isolated including B. suis and B. abortus (Sumner 1950; Nichols 1951; Wochnik-Dyjas 1972a,b; Mousa et al. 1986). Neurobrucellosis maybe a presenting feature at the onset of the disease in the absence of other systemic manifestations of brucellosis. Neurobrucellosis may occur at any age (Debono 1964) and may present at any time during the course of active disease. Systemic features and localisations to other systems or body organs maybe present as well. In endemic areas, the detection of unexplained neurological findings should alert the treating physician to brucellosis as a possible cause.
