Abstract
Among the osteoarticular localisations of Brucella infection, spinal and extraspinal osteomyelitis is the most frequently reported manifestationand is most commonly caused by B. melitensis (Madkour 1998, 1996, 1989). Identification of the sites of musculoskeletal localisations by imaging modalities is important not only for diagnostic purposes but also in deciding the therapeutic strategies, using either antibiotics alone (two- or three-antibiotic regimen) or in combination with surgical intervention. Musculoskeletal imaging will also help in determining the extent of the damage and the possible involvement of surrounding structures. Imaging investigations are not aimed at establishing the diagnosis of active brucellosis, as this will be achieved by other means, including history, symptoms, signs and laboratory investigations.
