Abstract

Even animals living in a temperate climate are regularly subject to divergent com binations of skin and core temperatures. Because both variables influence all thermoregulatory responses, their modes of interaction are of major practical importance. Another more theoretically orientated purpose of this chapter is to provide data for the next one, which is concerned with the central nervous component in short-term temperature regulation. Input-output data alone cannot reveal how the process of regulation is actually performed in the central nervous system. However, they can set the frame for the neurophysiological approach and pose questions, which await answers from more specific methods [259,466].
