Abstract

Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) has been the gold standard in the evaluation of acute diseases of the aorta. Because of the invasive nature of DSA and the specific risks to the patient, other less invasive imaging procedures such as ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have become the focus of increasing interest. In particular, CT angiography has become an important technique in the evaluation of the vascular system (Rubin et al. 1993). Volumetric data acquisition permits three-dimensional visualization of the aorta and its branches and additionally allows excellent evaluation of the surrounding tissue and parenchymal organs (Rubin et al. 1993). With the recent introduction of multislice helical CT (MSCT), CT angiography can be performed with higher longitudinal spatial and better temporal resolution. Subsequently, image quality should be improved substantially. In this chapter, the advantages of MSCT and the major indications of CT angiography of the aorta are presented.
