Zusammenfassung
Hugh Hampton Young wurde am 18. September 1870 in San Antonio, Texas, als einziges Kind von William Hugh Young, einem General der konföderierten Armee, und seiner Frau Frances Michie Kemper Young geboren. Bereits sehr früh wurde der Junge in die Obhut seines Großvaters Colonel Hugh Franklin Young gegeben. Dieser entstammte einer kinderreichen Familie in Virginia und hatte sich im Alter von 16 Jahren entschlossen, die Familie zu verlassen und nach Westen auszuwandern. Aus Youngs Autobiographie geht klar hervor, dass er in seinem Großvater ein heldenhaftes Vorbild sah, der ihn in frühster Kindheit mit abenteuerlichen Jagdgeschichten von Büffeln und Bären fesselte (Young 1940).
