Abstract

Over the last two decades, sectional imaging has developed rapidly. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging are now established methods of investigation of the foot and ankle, and both methods continue to develop so rapidly that descriptions of the current state of the art remain valid for only a few months. The clinical value of comparisons between techniques such as CT and MRI depends upon the condition being imaged, the model and age of the scanners used, the scanning protocol, and the experience and ability of the scanner operators and the radiologist. Whilst CT is ‘loosing ground’ to MRI for imaging the musculoskeletal system, it should not be forgotten that the methods are complementary. In addition, CT ‘came first’, is more widely available, cheaper, quicker and can be easier to perform well and interpret.
