Transient Sulfur Dioxide Uptake by an Aerosol Droplet in a Convective Flow

Abstract

Studies of sulfur dioxide absorbed by an aerosol droplet command both scientific and practical interest. On the scientific aspect the atmosphere is filled with aerosols in which the liquid water droplets dominate a considerable amount. For instance, when these droplets are small and suspended in the sky, they are called clouds or fogs. In contrast, if the droplets grow to a great extent, they fall to form rains or snows. For these water droplets, they can absorb atmospheric trace gases such as S02 and NH3 [1,2], as well as collect and scavenge small solid particles [3,4]. Thus, they provide an important mechanism for cleaning the atmosphere. On the practical side it is known that spray towers and wet scrubbers have been widely applied in industrial processes to remove air pollutants, especially for sulfate. In those of the mentioned equipment, water is an important medium that is commonly utilized to wash flue gas, thereby transferring hazardous components from gas phase to liquid phase.
