Breast Cancer Screening using a Dedicated Breast CT Scanner: A Feasibility Study

Abstract

Physical measurements of radiation dose, image noise and contrast were performed on a clinical CT scanner, using cylinders of breast dimensions. The contrast to noise ratio and signal to noise ratio were calculated from these measured data. The SNR versus lesion diameter results demonstrate, based on Rose’s criterion (SNR≥5), that breast CT can produce excellent image quality at mean glandular doses comparable to mammography. The potential to identify smaller lesions may improve early detection performance, which in turn would likely result in a reduction of breast cancer mortality.
