Simultaneous Acquisition of Diffraction, Scattering and Phase-Contrast Images by Means of a Multi-Layer Edge-On Microstrip Detector
The SYRMEP (SYnchrotron Radiation for MEdical Physics) collaboration has built and is currently operating a synchrotron radiation beamline dedicated to digital mammography at ELETTRA, the Trieste synchrotron radiation facility. A multi-layer, single photon counting edge-on silicon microstrip detector has also been designed by the collaboration. Recently, new imaging modalities have been investigated; namely, phase- contrast, diffraction and scatter imaging. All these techniques result in a relevant increase in image contrast and detail visibility with respect to conventional absorption imaging. Our recent work demonstrates that, with the proper set-up, all these techniques can be implemented making use of the microstrip detector quoted above. Hence, since this device has a very high efficiency, the images can be acquired while delivering a low dose to the sample. Moreover, the single photon counting capability of the device allows the detection of very small contrasts
