Zusammenfassung
Die Endoprothetik ist seit ihrer Einführung durch Charnley [6] Anfang der 60er Jahre einer der segensreichsten Fortschritte in der Medizin. In Deutschland werden jährlich ca. 170.000 Hüft- und Kniegelenke implantiert und verhelfen damit unserer Gesellschaft auch im höheren Alter, zu einem aktiven und selbstständigen Leben. War die Infektionsrate in den ersten Jahren noch dramatisch hoch (10%), konnte diese Zahl über die Jahre auf etwa 1–2% gesenkt werden. Dieses liegt zum einen an den verbesserten Hygienemaßnahmen, die sich im Operationsablauf ergeben haben, an der Reinraumtechnik und an den antiseptischen, aber auch an optimierten operativen Verfahren [15, 17]. Dennoch bleiben die jetzt erreichten Infektionsraten relativ konstant, aber die ansteigenden Zahlen von Primärimplantationen lassen die absolute Anzahlen der Infektionen ebenfalls steigen.
