Zusammenfassung
Die zunehmende Industrialisierung unserer Gesellschaft hat den globalen Kreislauf nahezu aller Elemente dramatisch beschleunigt (Nriagu 1979; Li 1981; Nriagu u. Pacyna 1988) und weitreichende Konsequenzen für ökosystemare Gleichgewichte nach sich gezogen. Aquatische Ökosysteme reagieren sehr empfindlich auf anthropogene Veränderungen und sind sensible Indikatoren für die Belastung unserer Umwelt (Sigg u. Stumm 1991). Gleichzeitig stellen Binnenseen neben Grundwasser die wichtigste Süßwasserressource dar und verdienen deshalb unsere besondere Aufmerksamkeit (Wetzel 1983). Der steigende Wasserverbrauch von Industrie und Haushalten nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg führte zu einer Verknappung der unterirdischen Wasservorräte, so daß z.T. wieder auf Oberflächenwasser zurückgegriffen werden muß. So beziehen z.B. Stuttgart und Zürich ihr Trinkwasser aus dem Bodensee (→ Kap. 19) bzw. Zürichsee. Metropolen wie Los Angeles oder Hongkong müssen ihren Trinkwasserbedarf aus künstlich angelegten Stauseen decken. Daneben sind Seen wichtige Erholungsräume und bedeutende Wirtschaftsfaktoren (z.B. Tourismus, Fischerei), so daß für den Schutz von limnischen Ökosystemen eine detaillierte Kenntnis aquatischer Prozesse und Kreisläufe bis heute nicht an Aktualität verloren hat. Seen sind sehr dynamische Ökosysteme. Sie unterliegen komplexen Wechselwirkungen biotischer und abiotischer Faktoren, die sich nachhaltig auf die Wasserqualität und Gewässerbiologie auswirken (Lampert u. Sommer 1993). Trotz umfangreicher Sanierungsmaßnahmen und spürbarer Verbesserung der Gewässersituation in den letzten zwanzig Jahren befin-den sich manche Seen immer noch in einem kritischen Zustand. In vielen Fällen stellen Seesedimente die Hauptquelle für Nähr-und Schadstoffe dar (internal loading; → Kap. 19).
