Zusammenfassung
Sowohl natürliche als auch anthropogen bedingte Emissionen tragen zur Gesamtmenge an Schwefeldioxid (SO2) in der Atmosphäre bei. SO2 ist ein Gas, das unangenehm stechend riecht, sobald seine Konzentration 1 nl 1-1übersteigt. Die weltweite Emission von Schwefeldioxid aus natürlichen Quellen wie z.B. mikrobieller Tätigkeit, Vulkanen, Schwefelquellen, Emission von verschiedensten Oberflächen inklusive Vegetation, Gischt und Verwitterungsprozessen (siehe nächsten Abschnitt) beträgt 128 Mt Schwefel (S) jährlich (a-1). Sie ist lediglich um ca. 50% höher als die durch menschliche Tätigkeiten hervorgerufene Emission (momentan 70 Mt S a-1), obwohl natürliche Emissionsquellen weiter über die Erdoberfläche verteilt sind und für natürliche Hintergrundwerte von ca. 1 nl SO2 1-1sorgen. Die biogene Emission von Verbindungen, die reduzierten Schwefel enthalten, durch Vegetation, Feucht-gebiete und Meere ist jedoch höher und wird zusammen mit H2S in Kapitel 4 näher betrachtet.
