Abstract

Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, collectively known as idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), remain a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. While other inflammatory diseases of the gut are distinguished either by a specific etiologic agent or by the nature of the inflammatory activity, ulcer-ative colitis and Crohn’s disease are disorders of unknown etiology, with an uncertain and unpredictable course and a variable response to medical and surgical management (DEBINsKI and KAMM 1997; BRZEZINSKI and LASHNER 1997).
