Shell Structure of Metal Clusters

Abstract

As pointed out in Sect.1.2.2, it is not an exaggeration to mention that finding of the shell structure in alkali- and noble-metal microclusters has opened a new field of microcluster physics. In this chapter we first elucidate theoretically the shell structure of metal clusters by applying a simple model. The shell structure is expected to induce a deformation of the cluster with open shells. It plays an important role in the fragmentation of microclusters as found in the nuclear fission. These shell effects represent the main subjects of this chapter.
