AO implants were primarily developed for internal fixation of fractures using the philosophy of the AO Group. This philosophy was developed some years ago (Müller et al. 1984) and its goals of internal fix-ation still apply:
  1. 1.

Stable internal fixation designed to fulfill the local biomechanical demands

  2. 2.

Preservation of blood supply by means of atrau-matic surgery and soft tissue preservation

  3. 3.

Anatomical alignment - particularly in regard to the sagittal plane

  4. 4.

Early active pain-free movement of muscles and joints
