Summary

With new developments in the design of accelerators and detectors, increasing attention is being focused on ion-atom collisions, in which the projectile velocity is comparable to the speed of light and in which inner shells of high-Z ions are involved, so that the electrons also move relativistically. We will regard collisions as relativistic, if the projectile energy exceeds 100 MeV/u. In this overview, we discuss recent improvements of experimental methods, the various processes that can occur, specifically direct reactions like ionization and excitation, nonradiative and radiative electron capture, and finally electron-positron pair production.
