Abstract

A compact laser synchrotron X-ray source is under research in the Femtosecond Technology Project [1]. A precisely controlled high-brightness terawatt laser produces an ultrashort, monochromatic and highly directed X-ray beam through inverse Compton scattering with a low-emittance electron beam. A QED(Quantum Electro Dynamics) calculation derived the expected performance and the nonlinear limitation of the process. The critical technology, precise spatial, and timing control of the laser and electron beam, were advanced especially in the recent laser and electron beam generations.
