Abstract

The mechanical behavior, i.e., the response of a material to an externally applied mechanical load, is of basic importance for any kind of structural application. It can be described largely in terms of the material properties that govern plastic deformation and fracture. Macroscopically, these properties can be expressed in terms of materials parameters, which can usually be measured without detailed knowledge of the microscopic origin of these properties. Microscopically, these properties are related to processes on a scale ranging from atomic dimensions to the typical dimensions of the morphology of the material.
