Security Aspects of the EU’s Northern Dimension

Abstract

This chapter seeks to examine the security aspects of the EU’s Northern Dimension. It first looks at whether the EU has security interests in its northern region, however defined, and, if so, what these are. Secondly, it analyses the Northern Dimension initiative as a reflection of any EU security interests. What sort of security element has there been in it? Finally, is this security element sufficient to address the security needs of the states — and peoples — engaged in the Northern Dimension? Broadly it comes to the conclusion that if the Northern Dimension initiative can be seen as having a security dimension, then it is one that — in contrast to the traditional emphasis on military defence and alliances — attempts to treat the security needs of those in the region through the process of integration.
