Abstract
The main characteristic of the presented approach is the service time logic that every stockpoint supplies its successors after a predetermined time span. The strategic decision upon these inventory control policy parameters is connected to the safety stock planning approach. Reasonable demand variability is absorbed by these strategic buffers, whereas extraordinary emergency situations are left to operating flexibility. Its applicability to general network supply chains, the availability of several heuristic solution methods with satisfactory accuracy, and further extendability of the underlying logic makes this approach favorable for utilization as a standardized tool for safety stock planning.
